Mechanical filter media depend on four primary filtration mechanisms. These include sieving, impaction, interception, and diffusion. The performance of filter media which utilizes these mechanisms is generally not impacted negatively by environmental factors. Each of these mechanisms is responsible for filtering a different size range of particles. Sieving is known to be the mechanism for trapping the largest particles, and diffusion is the mechanism for trapping the smallest particles.
