U.S. officials have issued guidelines to help building engineers and designers select air filters and air cleaning systems to protect people from chemical, biological or radiological attacks. The Department of Health and Human Services noted that the guidelines are meant to help improve air filtration in buildings such as offices, retail stores, schools, transportation terminals, indoor shopping malls and sports arenas.
The guidance includes a list of steps to take in selecting and using proper air filters, which remove particles from the air, and cleaning systems, which remove gases and vapors. In addition to bolstering preparedness for an attack, improved filters and air cleaning systems provide other benefits, including preventing respiratory infections, reducing exacerbations of asthma and allergies, and generally improving indoor air quality.
The guidelines may be viewed online or downloaded as a PDF file for review. The information, published through NIOSH, The CDC and DHHS is freely distributable.
